Just looking for some info on Graduate assistant positions. I know that d1 schools around here have grad assistants, just wanted to know if they get some assistance from the school towards their grad school payments, or any benefits in general of being an graduate assistant? Thanks!

Hello Coach Matvey....

There are some perks on graduate assistants as I am learning. I recently applied for a grad assistant position at Texas A&M - Kingsville a NCAA D-II school for the 2009-2010 school year and Coach Peterson told me that the school can do free room and board as well as $4000 per semester on top of teaching classes if hired to teach activity (1 hour) courses. I am not sure as of yet what a D-I school can offer but I am sure it may be probably more depending on the school. Good luck in your endeavors and hopefully this is helpful...

In D1, in general, the school pays for the Graduate Assistant's education (Master Degree) and offers a small stipend (practically minimum wage for the hours worked in basketball season).

The true benefit of being a G.A. is that you are essentially an apprentice in the coaching field. Often, G.A.'s have an office with the other coaches, will be in charge of film exchange and cutting up tape, scheduling road practices, etc. It's a great opportunity to being to learn how a program works and start to network.

How do you find these positions? Does it have a lot to do with who you know? Does anyone have any tips?
