Anybody know anything about Director of Basketball Operations jobs?

Are they a good gig? Are you a simply a secretary or do you get to do some coaching?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Director of Basketball Operations isn't allowed to do any coaching or off-campus recruiting under NCAA rules. They do handle all the administrative duties for the team, including booking hotels, transportation, and meals, as well as scheduling practice times and making sure everything gets set up for practice. Most DBO's also coordinate film exchange, basketball camps, and schedule on-campus recruiting visits for prospects. Some also serve as video coordinator at smaller D1 programs who don't have funding for a separate position.

I've been trying to get a DBO position for the past few months without much luck, largely due to my lack of college playing experience or relevant contacts within the field. I'm currently thinking about trying to volunteer at D2 or JUCO schools in the area to try to get some good experience and increase my contacts for the future.

I was not aware that DBOs are not allowed to coach. I could deal with not being able to recruit but not coaching would suck. Do you know if they are responsible for running the camp? I worked a camp at a Big Ten school a few years ago and I feel like the DBO did all the work.

There are quite a few college coaches registered on this site. Maybe you could find one in your area and hit them up for a volunteer gig? Regardless, good luck!

Thanks for the info!

From what I've seen, most of the time the DBO is in charge of the camp, doing most of the arrangements and making sure everybody gets where they need to be.

As far as my career goes, I've spoken with several coaches and athletic officials who told me that if you want to be a D1 coach in the future, recruiting and coaching experience is invaluable, even if it is at a lower level. That's got me leaning toward trying to volunteer somewhere local.

Running my high school camp is hard enough. I couldn't imagine having to feed and house the kids too.

Maybe a JUCO. They get a lot of practice recruiting having the players for two years at the most.
