I'm a person who played NAIA DII basketball in college and wants to have a career in college coaching. To you college coaches out there how did you get started? Do I need to go back to school and get a Masters in something were my internship is in Coaching if so than what field should I do this in? Any and all advice would be helpful.

Jay,
I made similar post a few days ago... I am in the same position. The best route I've heard is, like as my post mentions, to get a graduate asssitant job somewhere. The question I am wondering, is what if you CAN'T find one?? It's been a few days now since my original post and I just wish this message board was more active. Fellow coaches, please, you got a couple young aspiring coaches here who need some direction! Any and all tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Yes the best thing to do is to get a graduate asst possition. I was also an NAIA D2 player and I was fortunate enough to get my varsity high school head coaching job directly out of high school. I was the head coach there for 3 seasons and knew that I wanted to get back into the college ranks. I am now a GA at the Universtiy of Rio Grande. I was lucky enough to be asked to come back by a former college coach. There are always GA jobs out there, you may have to be willing to move however. HoopDirt.com is a good site to find job openings. If you are persistent and do things right good things will eventually happen to you.

I suspect there will be a lot more openings in the next month or two but do you have any interest in these?

Thanks for the Advice..What are some great web pages to look for GA jobs our there. Also do you apply for the job than try to get into the Graduate Porgram for that school??? What Graduate Program do you apply for to be a GA?

Coach Drew, I search online everyday for GA positions. Just about TWO minutes ago, I just got done sending out my application to both of those schools (elmira, illinois weselyan) that you mentioned. I appreciate your help and input.

Still, I am asking everyone on this board, what if I, or ANYONE for that matter, can NOT get a Graduate Assistant position? Theres obviously tons of competition for these jobs (even competition between me and others on this site), so what are alternative ways for us to get a foot in the door? Thanks in advance...

P.S. I have been wondering the same thing as Jay about getting INTO the graduate program. I believe for the majority of schools, the deadline for applying to grad school as already passed. So how does this work? Do they leave a spot OPEN for whoever gets the grad assistant job?

If you can not get a GA spot there are usually volunteer asst spots that can or need to be filled. Now obviously by the name there is no money involved but you can earn some in the summers if the program does shootouts and or summer camps. I know many coaches take care of underpaid assistants that way. I know for me they alloud me to be accepted to any graduate program I qualified for because it was tied in with the position I was hired into.
