Born and raised in suburban Philadelphia, the athletic career of Keith Mackrey began in 1983 as a 10-year old, playing for the Cheltenham Athletic Association’s Travel Team. The importance of the fundamentals of basketball was then instilled. He continued to develop his skills over the next 15 years, achieving success at the High School, Collegiate and Professional levels.
Keith attended Cheltenham High School in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. He was a 3-year starter on the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team. As a sophomore, Keith started at point guard and averaged 12.0 points and 5 assist per game. Named to the Montgomery County Record Super 10, as an honorable mention selection, that was not enough. That summer, Keith began to attend a year-round basketball clinic, run by Sam Rines. The clinic strictly focused on learning the fundamentals of basketball, both physically and mentally. Through participating in this clinic, Keith was able to play in the nationally recognized SONNY HILL Basketball Summer League. Sam Rines’ clinic today, boasts over 1,000 active players and in recent years has produced such super stars as: Kobe Bryant, Alvin Williams, Cutino Mobley, Hakim Warrick, Chevon Troutman and many more. The benefits of participating in the clinic were evident the very next high school basketball season. In Keith’s junior and senior years he played both point and shooting guard positions. He averaged 21.0 points and 8 assist per game. Keith was honored both seasons by being named as an All-Suburban One First Team and Montgomery County Record Super 10 First Team Selection. In his senior year, he was also an All-State Honorable Mention.
Keith was recruited to play at the collegiate level by Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. KU is a NCAA Division II institution that competes in the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.)
While playing his 4 years at Kutztown, and starting in 3 of those, Keith was an All-PSAC selection twice. Keith currently holds the record for most Three Pointers in a Career (214). In addition, Keith is ranked in ALL-TIME SCORING at 1,046 points. Recently, he was honored and named to the ALL-CENTURY TEAM at Kutztown University as one of the best players in the first 100 years of the Men’s Basketball program, representing the ALL-1990’s players.
Following his collegiate career, Keith continued to play competitive basketball at the professional level. He joined the Eastern Basketball Alliance (EBA). There he played for both the Lancaster Storm and the Wilkes-Barre Yellow Jackets. A year and a half into playing in the EBA, Keith Suffered injuries that prevented him from continuing to play professional basketball.
Since this time, Keith has focused on developing his career “off the court” and putting his Bachelor’s degree to work, while continuing to play basketball recreationally. During this time, Keith has grown to have a passion for instilling the same fundamentals of the game that he learned early in his career, into the minds and hearts of anyone who will listen.
Presently, Keith has been the basketball fundamentals trainer for the Wellington Travel Basketball Association in Wellington, FL and is Co-Owner of S.M.A.C.K. Basketball INC., which provides fundamental clinics to the Wellington Recreation Department and to players seeking individual training. The past three seasons he has been the JV Boy’s Basketball and Varsity Associate Head coach at Park Vista High School. This past season the JV Team posted a record of 17-4 and in the previous season the team went 16-4 and Varsity won their first playoff game in school history. During his first season the JV team had a record of 13-10 which was the first winning record in school history and Varsity had there best season ever with a record of 9-16. Keith also was the head coach for the South Team for the Palm Beach County North/South Senior All-Star game for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons. During the 2005-2006 seasons, he was the Head Freshman Boy’s Basketball Coach and Varsity Associate Head Coach at Wellington High School. The freshman season ended with an 11 – 5 record and Varsity with a 16 – 10 record and lost in the district semifinals.
