What Stats Do You Keep?

Over Thanksgiving I was talking with my uncle, who is a basketball coach. We were talking X's and O's, strategy, and everything basketball related. One thing I found interesting was one of the stats that he had an assistant keep.My uncle had an assistant keep how many points were scored while each different group of five were on the floor. That way he could go back and look at which five seemed to work together the best and score the most points.I was just wondering what other kind of stats…See More

Prepare Like Champions, Win Like Champions!

WOW! Anything CAN happen! Tennessee beats some of the best teams in the nation (including #3 Pitt) and is undefeated and then goes on to lose two games in a row (to Oakland and UNC at Charlotte). A top ranked team like Tennessee has to understand that every team they face is ready to knock them off and prove themselves. In high school, college, and NBA, it does not matter who you play, but how you prepare to play them. If you usually scout every game and have a report ready for the team, why…

Harper, thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my blog posts.  I certainly know exactly where you're coming from, coaching high school guys and being only a few years older than them.  If you read my posts, you will see I am restating some of the things, however...

Work on building relationships with them.  Before practice, after practice, ask them about school, how their day went, if they are doing well with homework, if they are applying for colleges.  Go out of your comfort zone to socialize with them and give them a chance to get to know you.  Rebound for them before and after practice when possible.  Then, throughout practice, try to give insight to guys in between drills or to players who are sitting out.  Slowly, but surely you will see guys start to come around, trust that you know what you're talking about, and even seek you for advice.  Best of luck, and I hope you continue to enjoy my blog posts.  Hit me up if you ever have any questions or just want to talk basketball.
