Good morning everyone, hope all is well. I purposely haven't posted a blog since April. I wanted to see how the AAU season finished up. Although we will participate in the Junior Nationals July 22-25, our season is basically over. Although our record is .500, I believe we accomplished what we set out to do. As I mentioned in an April post, this was the Boys and Girls Club of New Haven (CT) Blazers U16 Girls Basketball teams' first year competing in AAU, however, of the 10 girls on our roster, 7… Continue

AAU: The Necessary Evil

We opened our AAU season today. This is my first season with the Lady Blazers U16 team. Because of a scheduling error, we played the Salt City (Syracuse, NY) Shakers twice. In the first game, after being down 10 in the first half, we held them to 3 points in the second half to win by 20 points or so. We weren't sharp offensively, however, the defense was stellar, especially when we went to the full court rpressure. The second game was similar as we held them to 9 first half points. We made a poi… Continue

We weren't sharp offensively, however, the defense was stellar, especially when we went to the full court rpressure. The second game was similar as we held them to 9 first half points. We made a point to tell the girls that holding a team to 12 points in 28 minutes was a great effort. We were ahead by 10 with 4 minutes left when we picked up the defensive intensity and went on a 10-2 run to close out the game. My assessement after 2 games is that we can be a pretty good team after this AAU season. While it is nice to win, I believe my job as an AAU coach is to help girls get better and go back to their respective high schools having improved on all aspects of their game, especially things that they aren't accustomed to doing. As a high school coach, I just have a different philosophu went it comes to AAU. I believe that AAU season should be for individual skill development and opportunities to play in exposure tournaments to be seen by college coaches. If someone has a desire to play at the next level, it's my job to get them where the coaches are, it's up to them to make an impression.

AAU season is upon us. The New Haven Lady Blazers make our AAU debut tomorrow. This is our first season with a U16 program. We put this team together with the soul purpose of getting some girls in the Greater New Haven with hopes of playing college ball an opportunity to be seen by some college coaches. Also a good time to implement the Read & React offense. AAU: The Necessary Evil.
