Short Bio
I am originally from Brooklyn, NY. I graduated in May 2008 from the University of Rhode Island, where I played basketball on scholarship for 4 years. I was a captain and starter. Although I had a pretty rough career (3 knee surgeries in 3 years), I was able to complete by double major in Communications Studies and Sociology, and hold the # 3 place in the record books for most blocked shots in a college career. I had a great college experience playing at the Division 1 level. I learned alot and look forward to one day being able to coach!

If not at your alma mater, maybe you could work with a coaching staff in your past conference. It's all about who you know. Try branching out and going to recruiting areas (H.S. tourneys, local JuCo tourneys) and make contact with all the coaches you may know first. On a larger level, go to NIKE clinics, Final Fours etc. just to meet coaches and see what is out there. The fact that you played will help out a lot. More people know about you than you realize. It is just a matter of you making yourself available and showing an interest at this point. Oh yea, it wouldn't hurt to start making contact with local JuCo coaching staffs in your area for maybe a volunteer/grad asst position.

Hello , my name is Gary Matthews Regional Scouting Associate for C.H.A.M.P.S. Inc. Our company mantra is “WE CAN HELP ANYONE, ANYWHERE, IN ANY SPORT, WHO HAS THE DESIRE AND ABILITY TO “COMPETE AT THE NEXT LEVEL.” I find that many high school athletes end their athletic careers prematurely because they were never approached by colleges. In fact, not all college athletic programs have large recruiting budgets; they are simply unable to see many qualified candidates. If your athletes want to compete at the next level, they should not wait for college coaches to call them. It is up to them to get the word out about themselves. Using a proactive direct marketing approach, C.H.A.M.P.S. has helped many qualified high school athletes achieve their goal of competing at the college level. Please visit our web site at www.champs2.com when you get a chance. I would like the opportunity for an in person, face to face meeting with you, any interested parents, booster club members or other coaches, to discuss the possibilities of helping some of your athletes in their quest to compete at the next level. I have found that many high school athletes find out too late in the process, that they don't meet NCAA Eligibility Requirements regarding, Core Course Academic Requirements, Amateurism Status, GPA, SAT and ACT scores. As a public service and an opportunity to tell people about our service, I would like to give a presentation highlighting the NCAA Eligibility Requirements, the benefits of being informed and of having a sound game plan.

Respectfully,

Gary Matthews

Question : How to get players to stay within range, it's like everyone wants to shoot the 3 ball with bad mechanics?

You might want to start off by volunteering at the High School level or coaching a summer or fall league team.

Best thing you can do is look to becoming a grad assistant. I'm pretty sure your coach from Rhode Island would help you find a staff that needs one
