Mathematical Model on when to take last shot

This article is about a study done on when players should take a last shot. It weighs the difference between taking a quick shot and risking giving the other team enough time to answer, or wasting some time before taking the shot. The study says that players waste opportunities to score by trying to take time off the clock. NBA players give their opinion on the idea.…

NCAA Basketball Coaches on the Hot Seat

Eamonn Brennan from ESPN.com wrote a great post on 10 NCAA college basketball coaches on the hot seat.  Rather then write my own post I am just going to link to his.  He did a much better job then I would do.

Great Story from D3 Game

This is the kind of stuff that makes small college athletics awesome. A basketball player that had a debilitating stroke as a freshman is not only allowed to remain on the team for four years but also becomes a team captain.  His motivational story is capped off by the events in this article.

Uncertain Times for Butler

Interesting article about whether or not Butler's great story is coming to an end with the loss of some players and a struggling season. Also mentions some day-to-day activities of the team and Brad Stevens motivational techniques.  Certainly worth reading.

Play of the Day-Zone Stagger

This is a zone play using 3 out 2 in set. The ball goes to the 2 on the right wing, and the 1 fakes a cut through the middle but then pops back up top and gets the ball back. He sends the ball to the 3 on the left wing while the 2 cuts around the baseline to the left corner. The 2 gets the pass and should be open for an outside shot.

Product Review :: Intrepid Sportswear Basketball Uniforms

Intrepid Sportswear is a Seattle based company that claims to have "the best unis in the game".  I get the impression they might be on to something.  The company recently submitted a set of rather large(they were made for an NBA player to wear in a photo shoot) uniforms for us to review.   My first impression was that the uniforms are good looking and durable.  The kind of uniforms that I could see my frosh team wearing in 10…

Play of the Day-1-3-1 PF Entry

This play starts with the 4 and 5 on the left and right wings and the 2 and 3 on the left and right blocks. First, the ball goes over to the 4, and the 3 cuts across to the left corner. Then the 3 gets a pass, and the 1 and 4 switch places. Then the ball is swung all the way to the 5 on the opposite wing, the 2 cuts out to the right corner, and the 3 moves to the right block. update...13-4 but...

  Hey everyone,

I said that I would keep you posted on the season, we are currentl 13-4 with two games left in our J.V. season. My guys are working so hard, we are the smallest team with the biggest heart. We run a hbrid DDM offense that they have mastered. the games we lost were close and 3 of the 4 were away games. I'm loving being back in the saddle, I hate that there isn't a J.V. state tourney. It seems that a lot of people within the school are noticing and with that come the…

Entrepreneur Turned Pro Hoops Player Buys Team

This is actually a pretty interesting story about a guy, Adam House, that sold a tech company and ended up pursuing a professional basketball career.  After making the team an opportunity came to buy a stake in the team which he did.  So essentially the guy is a reserve player and also the CEO.  We should probably ask this guy to help us grow HoopCoach but unfortunately House played basketball at Brother Rice High School a rival in my playing days and also as a coach.…

Play of the Day-Oregon

This is a quick-hitter play for a quick basket. It uses the basic 3 out 2 in set up. The 1 sends the ball over to the 3 on the left wing, and the 2 cuts down and around the baseline to the right corner off screens from the 5 and 4 on the blocks. The 3 passes the ball back up top to the 1, and the 5 cuts up to the right elbow. The 1 dribbles around the right elbow, using the 5 as a ball screen, and the 4 gets out of the lane. The 5 rolls left after setting the screen. The 1 can take it…

Building a winning program with no support financially or otherwise is taking its toll on my sanity!

Coaches,

I am a varsity boys basketball coach for an inner city school.  The basketball program before I arrived had no structure, discipline or foundation for winning.  They were getting beat by 50-60 points a game because they didn't know how to play the game.  When I was hired I said I would like to turn the basketball program around.  Another coach and I agreed to take on the task and I think have done a remarkable job.  We don't have our own gym.  We have virtually no…

Play of the Day-Swingset

This is a man to man set. The 2 and 3 start on the right and left blocks, and the 5 and 4 line up in front of them. The 1 dribbles toward the right wing, and the 2 and 3 cut out to the wings. The 1 passes to the 2 on the right wing, and the 5 cuts up to the right elbow. Then the 5 screens for the 1, who cuts down to the right block. The 3 runs up top and gets the ball from the 2. Then the 4 cuts out to the left wing, and the 3 swings the ball to him. The 1 screens for the 2 who cuts down low…

Play of the Day-4 High

In this play, the 2 and 3 start on the right and left wings, and the 5 and 4 start on the right and left elbows. The first option starts when the ball is passed over to the 2. The 1 cuts around the 5 to the hoop and gets a pass for an inside layup. For the second option, the 1 continues his cut through the paint and stops on the left block. Then the 5 comes out to the wing and screens for the 2 who dribbles toward the middle. The 5 rolls off the screen to the basket, gets a pass from the 2,…

Triangle is a BLOB play in which the 3 inbounds the ball. With respect to the inbounder, the 5 starts on the right block, and the 2 starts on the left. The 4 starts just in front of the free throw line, and the 1 lines up behind him. When the play starts, the 1 pops up top to the to the three point line, and the 5 cuts up to screen for the 4. Bummer.  Longtime D1 Head Coach dies of of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.  Spoonhour coached at Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri State), Saint Louis, and UNLV.

The article mentioned something called "Spoonball" does anyone about this style of play?  I can't find anything outside what the article mentions in regard to tough defense and shooting 3's.…
