Gary Parish from CBSSports wrote a really interesting piece about life after Tennessee for Bruce Pearl's former assistants. At UT Pearl's assistants Steve Forbes and Jason Shay had salaries of $200,000 and $160,000 respectively. Working together at Northwest Florida State, a junior college in the panhandle, Forbes as the head coach is making $60,000 and Shay is making $20,000 as a JUCO assistant. Quite a dramatic drop from their SEC days. It would appear from the article that Pearl's longtime assistant's are not exactly happy about how the whole NCAA violation thing went down and furthermore Pearl's lack of interest in taking care of his people. Despite the loss of income the following quote from Forbes makes me think that losing their profile coaching jobs might be a blessing in disguise.
"Those guys have all been here," Forbes said, and the list of guys includes West Virginia's Bob Huggins, Memphis' Josh Pastner and Lamar's Pat Knight. "They're all out on the road running around like chickens with their heads cut off, but I don't have to go anywhere. I coach my team and go home. The pace of my life is just so much more sane."
So essentially, he gets to have all the big time coaches kiss his ass and he also gets to go home at a decent hour. Sign me up!
Regardless, I certainly think the story about Bruce Pearl's assistants is worth reading. Kind of puts shit in perspective.
