POSITION SUMMARY: Provides administrative support and assists with the day-to-day operation of the athletics department media relations office.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. As initial contact and under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director, Athletics Communications, assists in aggressively publicizing and promotion Tulane athletics for the sports of men’s basketball, men’s tennis and oversight of the graduate assistant that handles volleyball. This individual also will serve as the head of the Strategic Communications in the absence of the Assistant Athletic Director, Athletics Communications. In addition, this individual will manage the student intern program. This individual also will promote the program via news releases, e-mails communications, and phone calls; and performs all media relations duties (requests for information, interview schedules, etc.) for assigned sports with the goal of increasing positive exposure for Tulane. (30%)

2. Assists with public/media relations efforts by incorporating traditional public relation methodology with that of the new media, particularly web applications, utilizing such applications as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Assists in developing and testing new media additions to the Green Wave website or other sites as instructed to include, but not limited to: investigating trends on other web sites, testing web pages in commonly used web browsers, acquiring photographs for website use, proofreading web site content and uploading video. (20%)

3. Assists with the coordination of home event operations for men’s basketball, football and volleyball as well as other assigned sports and assists with game operations for other events. (15%)

4. Assists with production (writing, editing, and design) of publications (including media guides and game programs) for assigned sports to include women’s volleyball and men’s basketball. (15%)

5. Assists in maintaining departmental media archives, including statistics, photographs, clips, and releases. Serves as the academics point of contact and student staff supervisor. Arranges for photography of current student-athletes and events. Assists with the distribution of photos, statistics, and media releases, as directed. Promotes student-athletes, coaches, and programs for individual, team, and institutional awards, honors, and post-season play. (15%)

6. Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director, Athletics Communications. (5%)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3 years of media relations/communication experience
  • Experience with social and digital media

OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • 9 years of media relations/communication experience
  • Experience with social and digital media

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with coaches, administrators, student athletes and vendors
  • Extremely organized, self-starter, intrinsically motivated
  • Strong organizational, management and leadership skills
  • Proficient computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and social media
  • Proven ability to multi-task effectively
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines
  • Available to work flexible work schedule including nights and weekends
  • Travel with sport teams for away contests
  • Through knowledge of NCAA and American Conference rules and regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience at the Division I intercollegiate level
  • Familiarity with game operations duties and responsibility

NCAA Related:

Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately.  Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors all of their areas and/or programs activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
