Mary Baldwin University, an NCAA Division III and USA South Athletic Conference member located in Staunton, VA, is searching for eight graduate assistants for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years. The positions are designated for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track & field (2 positions) in addition to a position in the sports information department.

The graduate assistant coach reports directly to the head coach, who is the person responsible for all aspects of leading a NCAA program in the designated sport (listed below). This includes, but is not limited to, recruitment and retention of prospective student-athletes, student-athlete academic progress and development, competition preparation and strategy, adherence to NCAA Division III rules and regulations, and general administrative duties.

The graduate assistant coach will be responsible for supporting the philosophy, goals and mission of both the college and its Athletic program as well as adherence to departmental, university, USA South Athletic Conference and NCAA policies and procedures. The coaching staff members will be evaluated for the extent to which coaches are providing a positive meaningful educational experience for student-athletes leading to their graduation and the extent to which they have established a sport culture in which he/she is viewed by the student-athlete(s) as a mentor, educator and role model as well as competitive success.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to: serving as the lead administrator/head coach when the head coach is unavailable; recruiting and retention of student-athletes; contributing to the academic success of the student-athletes, practice and game preparation; scouting; fundraising; assist with athletic department events including community service; working closely with other department coaches and administrators responsible for rules compliance, athletic training, strength & conditioning, media relations, etc., to ensure the highest quality program possible for the student-athletes; other duties as assigned.

The Graduate Assistant Sports Information Director reports directly to the Sports Information Director and will contribute to all aspects of MBU sports information including, but is not limited to, compiling and maintaining statistics, athletics website, social media, video/webcasting, adherence to NCAA rules and regulations, and general administrative duties. Knowledge and experience in keeping in-game statistics, post-game video production and social media are preferred.

NCAA Rules Compliance: The graduate assistant coach will be responsible for knowledge of, and adherence to, NCAA Division III rules and regulations pertaining to recruiting, eligibility, and general operation of the program.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor Degree. Playing and/or coaching experience plus an understanding of NCAA Division III Rules Compliance is required. Excellent organization and communication skills necessary. First Aid, AED and CPR certifications, or willingness to secure certifications upon hiring. Must have a valid driver’s license and be available to drive team vans when needed.

Preferred Qualifications: Coach experience within a NCAA Division III intercollegiate program; prior
experience with recruiting, skill instruction, practice/game plan development, and administrative
responsibilities required fiscal management and recruiting experience.
