The Head Coach of Women’s Basketball directs all aspects of the intercollegiate Women’s Basketball team including coaching, recruiting, scheduling, program administration and budgeting. Additional responsibilities may include performing administrative duties as assigned at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.

Variable depending on season. Ability to work weekends and evenings. *Coaches are expected to be on campus during the academic year (late August – Reunion Weekend in June) and are expected to keep hours during this time that make them readily available to students. For full time coaches, this may involve greater than 40 hours per week in season of primary sport and varied weekly hours out of season. *Coaches must use annual allotment of 4 weeks of vacation appropriately and selectively depending on their sport(s)’ season(s). *It is expected that coaches will recruit during the summer months requiring possible additional travel. *Frequent overnight travel with student athletes is required during the basketball season.

Bachelor’s degree (Physical Education or related field) preferred OR a minimum of 5 years of coaching experience at the post secondary level and/or professional competitive experience. Required skills include: Knowledge of basketball skills and strategy and the ability to effectively teach them; ability to motivate and effectively communicate with student-athletes; willingness and ability to actively recruit qualified candidates to Bowdoin; commitment to being a positive member of the Athletics Department, the College community and the ability to influence his/her athletes to do the same; working knowledge of NCAA and NESCAC rules and an understanding of the philosophy behind them. Administrative skills such as prioritization, organization, and budgeting are needed. The coach must be self directed and motivated and be able to work independently and work under pressure. Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the standards of the College’s current Motor Vehicle Policy is required Current CPRAED, and First Aid certification must be maintained. Subject to a pre-placement criminal background check.

Demonstrated effectiveness in coaching Women’s Basketball is required. At least 2 years’ head coaching at the secondary or post secondary level or 3 years experience working in a competitive collegiate environment is required. Successful recruiting to a highly selective institution is preferable.
