Plans, develops and directs strategy for recruiting, counseling, coaching and leading student athletes in the basketball program. Directs the conditioning of student athletes to achieve maximum athletic performance, assesses skills of players and assigns team positions, evaluates own and opposition team capabilities to determine game strategies, and coaches or directs assistant coaches to instruct players in effectively developing techniques of game.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Duties include but are not limited to supervision organization of the athletic program in regards to recruiting, practices, and competition.
  • Administrative Duties include:
  • Manage budgets and college issued credit card, purchase orders, trip requests, travel preparation and meet necessary deadlines set by the college and/or athletic director.
  • Coordinate the collection of physical exams, transcripts, releases, waivers and other documents for eligibility purposes.
  • Recruitment of in state and out of state student athletes as well as advising, retention and counseling of current student athletes.
  • Promotion of the sport and team to the college, community, conference, region and nation. Promote student academic and athletic success. Interact with faculty, staff and administration.
  • Monitor student athlete attendance and grades to ensure the success and compliance with all NJCAA Region VI and KJCCC eligibility policies.
  • Responsible for community relations including planning and implementing projects and fundraising.
  • Responsible for the purchase and inventory of equipment including equipment bidding and purchasing, maintaining and storage of all items.
  • Attend all coaches, conference and region meetings related to the sport as well as college meetings and functions scheduled for employees.
  • Attend NJCAA Rules Seminar every 4 years.
  • Cooperate and coordinate all schedules and roster deadlines for NJCAA, Region VI, and KJCCC eligibility, college media functions and other athletic department requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of policies, procedures, rules, code of conduct and eligibility requirements of the Kansas Junior College Athletics Association, Region VI and the National Junior College Athletics Association By-Laws through all aspects of recruiting, eligibility, and practice.
  2. Motivate the student/athlete to engage in college and community life as well as make a positive contribution to society on and off campus.
  3. Demonstrate leadership on our campus through the recruitment, development of athletic team and support of other college programs.
  4. Manage proposed fiscal year budget.
  5. Make every effort to cast a positive public perception to Garden City Community College and the community of Garden City.
  6. Supervise and monitor all aspects of team travel.

Knowledge and Skills

Experience: Minimum of two to five years of similar or related experience.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to motivate or influence including a significant level of diplomacy and trust. High level of interpersonal skill. Work frequently involves contacts requiring considerable discussion of issues, material presentations and resolutions/solutions impacting departments or divisions.

Other Skills: Bachelor’s Degree in physical education, recreation, health or related field or equivalent, plus 2-5 years experience with collegiate program or as a high school head coach. Experience in an academic discipline or higher education, and two years recruiting background desired. Knowledge of national rules and regulations. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to maintain confidential information in professional manner. Ability to recruit off campus and lead and supervise players and coaches. Ability to get along with a wide variety of people in various situations. Computer proficiency necessary. Microsoft Office experience preferred.

Physical Requirements: Work requires moderate physical exertion and long periods of standing, walking, riding in bus or vehicle, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities. Job may require occasional limiting of heavy objects (over 50 pounds). Job requires above-average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment: Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in an indoor facility.
