Salary Range: $3,897 – $7,051 per month. Hiring salary will be $5,000 – $5,666/month commensurate with education and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sports Program Coordinator / Head Men’s Basketball Coach is a full-time position. Under the general supervision of the Athletic Director, the Sports Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the NAIA Champions of Character in coordination with the Edwards Leadership Development Program; acting as our academic monitor liaison to faculty for student athletes; overseeing summer basketball camps; and other related duties. The position also includes the recruiting, training, and head coaching for the Men’s Basketball team.
NOTE: This full-time position is 33% Unit 3 Faculty as Coach of the Men’s Basketball Team and 67% Unit 9 CSUEU as Sports Coordinator.

ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY:
Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on a scenic waterfront site in Vallejo, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1100 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. The campus currently offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Global and Maritime Studies, and Business Administration. A master’s degree in Transportation and Engineering Management is offered as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Head Men’s Basketball Coach

  • Coach student athletes individually and in groups to demonstrate game techniques; develop game strategy, provide advice in strength and conditioning; design conditioning programs and instruct student athletes on proper methods of using exercise equipment; and administer camp programs, clinics, and tournaments.
  • Recruiting activities including scouting, evaluating prospects, developing scouting reports, making recommendations on prospective recruits, and correspondence.
  • Community engagement including participating in fundraising, public relations, and marketing activities for program.
  • Schedule and contract competitions, monitor conduct and academic progress of student athletics, order and maintain sports equipment, and monitor and reconcile equipment budget.
  • Complete statistical compilations and update records of men’s basketball for present and archives.
  • Teach the Physical Education Intercollegiate Basketball class
    Administrative Duties
  • Co-Coordinator of academic support for all student-athletes.
  • Monitor the academic progress of all student athletes to ensure maintenance of NAIA eligibility.
  • Coordinate camp programs and community engagement events.
  • PLAYNAIA Clearinghouse advisement for freshmen.
  • NAIA Rules governance for Cal Pac Conference.
  • In coordination with University Advancement, engages alumni and encourages them to become or continue being donors.

    Leadership Development

  • Facilitate the NAIA Champions of Character leadership program to student campus wide.
  • ELDP (Edwards Leadership Development Program) sport coordinator with leadership committee to include student athletes
  • Support fund raising for the program.
  • Responsible for serving on various department, campus, Cal Pac and NAIA committees as assigned.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of basketball coaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Current first aid, CPR, and AED certification.

    Coaching Responsibilities:

    Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of sport specialty; principles and methods for designing and teaching individuals and groups; recruitment methods and techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and NAIA rules and regulations, CSU policies, procedures, programs, guidelines, applicable state and federal laws, and educational codes.
  • Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.

    Abilities:

  • Ability to lead and guide student-athletes; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate clearly and effectively; interpret and follow instructions; foster an environment to promote student-athlete well-being, academic success and personal development; utilize problem solving techniques; perform mathematical calculations; use basic office software packages, and related technology tools and systems.
  • Must be proficient in developing and managing a sports program and administering a budget.
  • Must be able to establish and attain program initiatives and priorities and develop and execute a recruitment strategy.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with competing priorities.
  • Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Must possess the ability to work in a diverse and equity minded environment.

    Skills:

  • Must possess analytical skills to assess student-athlete’s statistics, and review game footage.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes, coaching staff, parents and staff that support athletics.
  • Must demonstrate the leadership, organizational and administrative skills.

    Sports Coordinator Responsibilities:

    Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program
    and/or administrative specialty and be able to develop conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and NAIA rules and regulations, CSU policies, procedures, programs, guidelines, applicable state and federal laws, and educational codes.
  • Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.

    Abilities:

  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
  • Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

    Skills:

  • Skilled in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Must demonstrate the leadership, organizational and administrative skills.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sports sponsored by NAIA and National Sport Associations
  • Fundraising background
  • Community engagement activities for athletic teams

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    PHYSICAL, MENTAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.
    HOURS OF WORK/TRAVEL: Ability to work evenings and weekends in preparation for and during athletic events. Ability to make trips to locations outside of the Academy area and travel outside of normal business hours.

    BACKGROUND CHECK: A background check (including a criminal records check, fingerprinting and DMV records check) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
