The University of Maine Farmington’s Department of Athletics, in the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management is seeking a colleague who shares our vision of student success, and one who wants to assure a positive experience for student athletes at a public regional campus, where athletics has been a key component of campus life for many decades. The Department of Athletics is home to 15 men’s/women’s NCAA Division III and 6 USCSA Ski and Snowboard sports and a coaching, sports medicine, sports information, compliance, and instructional staff required to support the current roster of varsity programs. UMF is seeking applicants for the position of head women’s basketball coach. This position reports to the director of athletics.

The Head Women’s Basketball Coach at UMF provides leadership for and management of all aspects of the competitive intercollegiate sport which centers the student athlete experience / supports the various identities that student athletes hold, and serves the Department of Athletics staff, the UMF campus, and the greater community consistent with the University’s mission and compliant with all applicable laws, University policies, and member organization policies and requirements. The employee must be committed to fostering and supporting the academic and athletic achievement of student athletes, as part of their holistic development. They must foster a culture of trust and respect that values diversity and fosters inclusion and well-being. They must build positive student relationships and meaningful student experiences while demonstrating the utmost professionalism and integrity. Coaches at UMF are teachers in the most dynamic sense. Skill, strategy and character/leadership development are all part of the curriculum. The successful candidate will need to be an adept and competitive recruiter and fundraiser. Additional duties may include but are not limited to: strength and conditioning support, admissions work, athletic alumni relations/development, out-of-season event management, special events/projects/initiatives, possibly instructing a course in the coaching minor. Be a great team player within the department who is eager to work collaboratively with all programs/staff/administration who share facilities, resources and common goals, values and mission. Sincere interest and flexibility to assist and adjust responsibilities that support evolving department/university needs is required. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of applicable experience (those with any combination of equivalent experience and/or education are encouraged to apply)
  • Ability to drive a van for team transportation on occasion (ability to meet University requirements to become a certified driver)
  • Demonstrated commitment to holistic development of student-athletes

    • Demonstrated coaching success; demonstrated ability to teach through sport and about sport, coaching and transferable work/life skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to focus on the student athlete experience in general, and to support and advocate for staff and student athletes who hold marginalized identities and life experiences.
    • Demonstrated ability to succeed in recruitment, retention and graduation of qualified & talented prospective student-athletes.
    • Demonstrated ability to inspire student-athletes to develop to their fullest potential.
  • Demonstrated collaborative and collegial style of leadership, with the ability and willingness to work as a member of a team, and to foster a team environment within the program.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with community members (students, faculty, staff, guests, collaborators) from marginalized and oppressed groups and life experiences
  • Computer proficiency/knowledge

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Intercollegiate coaching experience
  • Familiarity with Maine (or similar) seasonal conditions 
  • Demonstrated effective recruiting experience (experience effectively using Front Rush or comparable program)
  • Experience playing competitive intercollegiate basketball 
  • Ability to forecast expenses and manage a budget (revenue, expenses, reports/reconciliation)
  • Demonstrated ability to run effective fundraisers
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and use new technology
  • Interest and experience (education/certification) with strength and conditioning for performance is a plus
