HoopCoach Playbook — Help & Frequently Asked Questions

Guides, tips, and troubleshooting for diagramming plays, using newly released features, and managing your team playbook.

★ New Features & Updates

New What is “Quick-Add Formations” and how does it save time?
Instead of manually dragging all five players and the basketball to the court, click the Quick-Add menu at the top. You can instantly populate standard offensive sets including:
  • 5-Out Open post spacing
  • 4-Out, 1-In Modern motion spacing
  • 3-Out, 2-In Traditional dual-post alignment
  • 1-4 High & 1-4 Flat Special situation sets
  • Box & Horns Set-play baselines
Once placed, all players snap into natural floor positions with the ball assigned to your primary ball-handler.
New How do I build and print a timed Practice Plan?
The Practice Plan builder lets you assemble practice scripts alongside your plays:
  1. Go to Practice Plans > Create New Plan.
  2. Set your gym start time (e.g., 3:30 PM).
  3. Drag and drop plays, shooting drills, conditioning circuits, and scrimmages into your schedule.
  4. Assign minute durations to each drill. The software automatically calculates the exact running clock times for your whistle.
  5. Click Export PDF to print a one-page clipboard sheet for coaching staff.
New What is the “Daily Team Puzzle” and how does it work?
The Daily Team Puzzle is designed to build player retention without extra coaching prep:
  • Every morning, the system automatically pulls a sequence from your active playbook and generates an interactive, multiple-choice or sequence puzzle.
  • Players log into the app, guess the next cut or pass, and build a Daily Streak.
  • Coaches can track player engagement and view which players are consistently studying play concepts outside the gym.
New How do I export watermark-free video clips for social media or team chats?
Under Play Management, select Export Video. For Pro coaches, this generates a clean, MP4 animation of your play with your audio voiceover embedded and zero watermarks. It is optimized for uploading to Twitter/X, Instagram Reels, Hudl, or sending directly into your team’s GroupMe/iMessage chat.
New How do Scouting Reports work?
You can now flag plays as Scout in the play editor. Tag plays with upcoming opponent names (e.g., “vs. East High”). This creates an isolated opponent scouting report collection so your team can walk through the rival’s favorite BLOBs, press breakers, and crunch-time sets during pre-game prep.

Drawing & Animating Plays

How do I create multi-phase or continuous movements?
  1. Position your players in the Initial Set.
  2. Click Add Movement (e.g., Movement 1). Drag the players, ball, or defenders to their next cut, pass, or screen.
  3. Click Add Movement again for the next sequential action (Movement 2).
  4. Click Play to preview the continuous fluid motion across all phases.

Tip: Use the Rename option on each movement tab (e.g., “Screen Away”, “Slip to Rim”) so phase names display clearly on exported PDFs.

How do I delete or reposition elements on the court?
  • Delete an element: Double-click the player, defender, cone, or line, then click the Trash Can (Recycle Bin) icon at the bottom.
  • Reposition: Simply drag the element across the floor.
  • Court Dimensions: Use the court view toggle in the bottom right corner to switch between Half Court and Full Court.
How do I add voice coaching notes over the animation?
Click the Microphone / Record Audio button. Press record while watching the play animate, and narrate reads, screen angles, and timing cues. When your players open the play on their phones, your voiceover plays in sync with the court movement.

Sharing, Roster & PDF Playbooks

How do my players access our playbook without editing rights?
  1. Go to Menu > Roster / Add Player and add your athletes’ email addresses.
  2. Under Playbook Password, assign a team password so your athletes can log in to view plays and hear voiceovers without having editing access.
  3. Athletes can review on desktop or download the HoopCoach mobile app to study plays on iOS or Android.
What are “Collections” and how do I print an entire Playbook to PDF?
Collections are folders you create to organize plays by category (e.g., “BLOBs”, “Zone Offense”, “Press Break”). Open any collection and click Generate Playbook PDF to output a formatted binder-ready PDF containing diagram frames, phase breakdowns, and your coaching notes.
Can I copy plays from other coaches into my account?
Yes. Explore the community-driven Plays Library. When you find a play or drill you like, click Collect. It instantly copies to your personal library where you can adjust player assignments, movement paths, and coaching notes to fit your squad.

Account Limits & Troubleshooting

What is the difference between Free and Pro?
  • Free Plan ($0): Up to 5 saved plays, access to the public Plays Library, basic drawing tools, and standard animations.
  • Pro Plan: Unlimited plays, unlimited Collections, Practice Plan builder, Playbook PDF exports, audio recording narration, watermark-free social video exports, scouting reports, private play protection, and team player accounts.
My play isn’t saving — what should I check?
  • Login status: If you left the browser open for an extended period, your session may have timed out. Open a new tab, log in at hoopcoach.org, and return to save.
  • Play count limit: If you are on the Free plan and already have 5 plays saved, delete an old test play or upgrade to Pro to save additional sets.
  • Ad-blockers: Ensure strict browser script-blockers are disabled for hoopcoach.org to allow animation state saves.
