Line | Baseline Out of Bounds Play

line baseline play animation

A lot of baseline out-of-bounds (BLOB) plays are far too complicated for youth basketball players They require players to memorize intricate patterns and specific timing leading to hesitation, delayed execution, and five-second violations.

Line is a simple set, utilizing a vertical stack(hence the name) on the strong-side lane line to manufacture immediate confusion, force defensive switches, and create an absolute layout of high-percentage scoring options.

Initial Set

When your team lines up in a straight line, it suffocates the defense’s ability to establish help-side positioning.

  • Player 1 (Inbounder): Stationed out of bounds, directly under the backboard.
  • The Line (Players 4, 5, 2, 3): Vertically stacked along the strong-side lane line.
    • Player 4 (Power Forward): Head of the stack, closest to the basket.
    • Player 5 (Center): Second in line.
    • Player 2 (Shooting Guard): Third in line.
    • Player 3 (Small Forward): At the base of the stack, closest to the top of the key.

Step-by-Step Play Breakdown

Initial Movement: Splitting the Stack

On the inbounder’s signal (a ball slap), the stack detonates in multiple directions to stretch the defense.

  • Player 4 (The First Option – Quick Slip): 4 immediately pivots and curls tightly around the front of the rim toward the weak-side low block. If the defense loses track of them in the chaos, this is a direct bounce pass for a layup.
  • Player 3 (The Safety Option): 3 pops straight up out of the back of the stack toward the top of the key, serving as the safety outlet to prevent a turnover.

The Decoy & The Screen: Creating the Opening

  • Player 2 (The Decoy Cut): 2 sprints hard off the stack directly to the strong-side corner. This movement is designed to drag their defender out of the paint and open up the lane line.
  • Player 5 (The Back Screen): As 2 clears, 5 steps up and sets a hard, solid back screen on 2’s defender or prepares to seal their own man on the block.
  • The Inbounder’s Counter (The Money Option): After passing the ball in bounds—either to 2 in the corner or 3 at the top of the key—Player 1 (the inbounder) immediately steps onto the floor, utilizing a screen-the-screener action from Player 5. 1 cuts hard directly off 5’s shoulder straight to the rim for a quick return pass and layup.

Coaching Points for proper Execution

Physicality at the Nail: Player 5 must make physical contact on the back screen. If they screen air, the play fails. Hold the seal until the cutter clears.

The Inbounder Must Sell the Pass: Player 1 cannot look down the target. Fake a pass to the safety (3) to freeze the defense, then slip it to the cutter.

Maintain Spacing on the Breakout: The breakout must be violent and fast. If players jog to their spots, the defenders will recover easily. 2 must sprint to the corner to drag the help defense away.
