Coaching Breakdown: Triangle Screen-the-Screener BLOB

This baseline out-of-bounds set uses “screen-the-screener” action out of a triangle alignment to generate two immediate scoring options: a quick layup at the rim or a wide-open look at the top of the key.

Initial Set

We align in a tight triangle around the paint area to compress the defense before exploding into our cuts.

  • 4 (Inbounder): Under the basket on the left side, ready to key the ball in.
  • 1 & 3 (The Guards): Stacked vertically at the top of the key/high post area, with 1 in front and 3 directly behind.
  • 5 (The Big): Stationed on the right low block.

Flow

1. The First Screen (The Decoy)

On the whistle, 3 initiates the action by dropping down from the high post stack to set a back-screen for 5 on the right block. 5 uses the screen to flash hard across the lane toward the ball, looking for a quick entry and an immediate layup.

2. The Second Screen (Screen-the-Screener)

As soon as 5 clears the lane, 1 dives straight down from the top of the key and sets a solid down-screen for 3 (the original screener).

3. The High Pop

3 uses 1‘s down-screen to explode straight up to the top of the key. Because the defense is usually recovering from the first screen or helping on 5‘s rim-cut, 3 almost always pops loose for an uncontested catch-and-shoot jumper.

4. The Inbounder’s Reads

4 has a simple progression to read within the 5-second count:

  • First Option: 5 cutting hard across the lane for a quick layup.
  • Second Option: 3 popping out to the top of the key for the open jumper.
  • Safety Release: 1 sealing their defender or popping out after setting the down-screen to reset the offense.

Teaching Points

  • Commit to the First Screen: 3 has to sell the screen on 5‘s defender. If it’s a soft screen, the defense can switch easily and blow up both options.
  • No Hesitation on the Pop: 3 must immediately read the down-screen from 1 and sprint to the perimeter. Any delay allows the defense to recover over the top.
  • Pass on the Money: 4 needs to deliver a crisp chest pass to 3 right in their shooting pocket so they can transition straight into their shot mechanism without resetting their feet.
