This Butler BLOB out of a Box Set is a clever baseline out of bounds play that catches the defense sleeping. It utilizes a quick cross screen at the elbows to shift defensive focus before dropping a hammer back screen for an uncontested layup at the rim.

Initial Set

  • Player 1 (Inbounder): Under the basket, slightly to the left side.
  • Players 4 and 2: Stationed on the blocks.
  • Players 5 and 3: Stationed at the elbows, completing the box.

Play Breakdown

The Setup & Cross Screen

  • The Action: 4 clears out from the left block, cutting hard to the perimeter. Simultaneously, 5 steps across the lane line from the left elbow to set a firm cross screen for 3.
  • The Goal: Force the elbow defenders to shift their vision away from the weak side.

The Decoy Cut

  • The Action: 3 uses 5’s cross screen to cut hard toward the left wing.
  • The Read: This movement serves as a decoy to drag help defenders away from the paint. As 3 clears, 2 begins to elevate from the right block toward the right elbow.

The Back Screen & Layup Finish

  • The Action: As 5 finishes the cross screen, they immediately pivot to face the opposite direction. 2 sprints up and sets a crushing back screen on 5’s defender.
  • The Finish: 5 rejects their original position and dives directly to the rim off 2’s back screen. 1 delivers a well-timed pass over the top for an easy layup.

Non-Negotiable Coaching Points

Pass Placement: 1 must look the defense off toward the left wing before snapping the ball back to the front of the rim for 5.

Set a Real First Screen: 5 must make physical contact on the cross screen. A lazy screen won’t draw the help defense necessary to setup the counter.

Reversed Roles: 2 needs to sell that they are simply filling the empty space at the elbow before surprising the defender with a physical back screen.
