Simple 5-Out Pass and Cut Offense for Youth Basketball

The 5-out pass and cut offense is an effective motion strategy for youth basketball teams. Because it does not require complex screening or set plays, it allows young players to focus on fundamental skills like spacing, passing, catching, and cutting to the basket.
Below is a step-by-step breakdown of how to run this simple youth basketball offense, as demonstrated in the video file 5 out.mp4.
Initial Setup and Alignment
The 5-out offense starts with all five players positioned outside the three-point line to maximize court spacing and leave the key open for cuts.
- Player 1: Positions at the top of the key (the point) with the ball.
- Players 2 and 3: Position on the left and right wings (free-throw line extended).
- Players 4 and 5: Position in the left and right corners.
How the Pass and Cut Motion Works
The basic rule of this offense is simple: pass the ball and immediately cut hard to the basket. If a player does not receive the ball on the cut, they fill an open perimeter spot, and teammates rotate to fill the vacated spaces.
Step 1: Pass to the Wing and Cut
As shown at the beginning of 5 out.mp4, Player 1 initiates the offense by passing to Player 2 on the left wing. Immediately after releasing the pass, Player 1 executes a hard basket cut down the middle of the lane, looking for a return pass for a layup.
Step 2: Perimeter Rotation (Filling the Spots)
If Player 2 cannot pass to Player 1 on the cut, the remaining players must rotate to maintain the 5-out spacing:
- Player 3 moves from the right wing up to the top of the key to replace Player 1.
- Player 5 moves from the right corner up to the right wing to replace Player 3.
- Player 1 continues their cut through the lane and fills the now-vacant right corner.
Step 3: Continuing the Motion
Once the rotation is complete, the team is back in a balanced 5-out alignment. Player 2 (on the wing) now passes to Player 3 at the top of the key. Just like before, Player 2 immediately cuts to the basket. Player 4 moves from the left corner up to the left wing to fill the open spot, and Player 2 will empty out to the corner if they don’t receive the ball.
Key Coaching Points for Youth Teams
To run this offense successfully at the youth level, focus on these core principles:
- Maintain Spacing: Players must stay outside the three-point line until they cut. Good spacing prevents defenders from helping and crowding the paint.
- Cut with Purpose: Cuts to the basket must be fast and aggressive. Even if a player doesn’t get the ball, a hard cut forces the defense to move and creates openings for teammates.
- Watch the Ball: Players filling open spots must always face the ball with their hands up, ready to catch and shoot or drive.
- Patience: Teach players to reverse the ball multiple times until a defensive breakdown leads to an open layup or an open shot.
