Coaching Breakdown: “Zoomer” Zone BLOB
Getting clean looks against a 2-3 zone under the basket requires forcing the defense to commit to the wrong guy. “Zoomer” is designed to do exactly that by overloading the baseline, freezing the zone’s back-line defenders, and creating a perfect gap for a post player to slip into for an easy short jumper or layup.
Initial Set
- 2 (Inbounder): Under the rim. Needs to see the whole floor and read the zone’s back line.
- 5 (Screener/Post): Right on the block, closest to the baseline.
- 4 (Cutter/Post): Second in the stack.
- 1 (Point Guard): Safety Valve
- 3 (Shooter): Out at the weak-side high post/elbow area.
The Execution
1. The Stack Break and Overload
The stack breaks sequentially. 1 makes themself available to to the inbounder by cutting strong side in location not blocked by the backdoor. 3 uses the double screen on the block to cut corner and draw a defender.
2. The Baseline Pin
5 pins the center defender of the zone while 3 occupies the strong side wing defender.
3. The Slip into the Gap
4 slips in the gap created by the 5′s screen and the 3‘s cut.
4. The Inbounder’s Progression
2 reads the bottom of the zone:
- First Option: 4 slipping right into the heart of the zone for a point-blank look.
- Second Option: 3 in the corner if the defense over-rotates to protect the paint.
- Safety Release: 1 at the top of the key to pull the ball out and flow into our primary zone offense.
Teaching Points
Inbounder Patience: 2 needs to use their eyes to hold the top defenders of the zone. Don’t stare down the slip; look at the safety first, then snap the ball inside.
Freeze the Zone: 3 has to sprint to that corner. The faster they get there, the faster the zone’s outside defender has to commit, which opens up the lane for 4.
