1-2-2 Soft Full Court Zone Press
The 1-2-2 Soft is a full court zone press that contains first and traps second. Instead of gambling on the inbounds, it funnels the ball up a sideline, waits for the offense to make a mistake, and springs the trap in the backcourt. It’s a less aggressive, change-of-pace press that disrupts rhythm without giving up the easy layups a hard trapping press can.
Alignment: 1-2-2
The press is named for how the five defenders line up from the ball to your basket:
- 1 (point). One defender at the front, near the inbounds.
- 2 (wings). Two defenders at the second level, splitting the width of the floor.
- 2 (safeties). Two defenders deep, protecting the middle and the basket.
Set the alignment after made baskets and free throws, when you have time to get organized.
How the Press Works
- Contain the inbounds. The point defender does not trap the inbounder. They take away the middle and influence the ball toward a sideline, keeping everything in front.
- Funnel to the sideline. The ball-side wing pressures the catch and steers the ball-handler up the sideline. The sideline becomes an extra defender — the offense has no room to that side.
- Wait for the mistake. Nothing is forced early. The press stays patient and lets the ball-handler advance into a bad spot: a loose dribble, a picked-up ball, or a careless pass.
- Trap in the backcourt. As the ball is dribbled up the sideline toward half court, the point and the near wing converge to trap, pinning the ball-handler against the sideline and the half-court line — two more defenders that can’t be passed through.
- Rotate behind the trap. The off-ball defenders read the trap. The nearest safety jumps the up-the-sideline pass, the middle is taken away, and the weak-side safety drops as the last line to protect the rim against a cross-court skip.
- Recover if it’s beaten. If the offense splits or escapes the trap, the press peels off and sprints back into your half court defense. No gambling, no easy basket given up.
Trapping Rules
- Trap zones, not everywhere. The trap is sprung at pre-set spots — the sideline near half court — not on every catch.
- Use the lines. The sideline and half-court line are defenders. Force the ball-handler into the corner they create.
- No fouls, no reaching. The trap contains with active feet and high hands; the goal is a five-second count, a bad pass, or a backcourt violation — not a steal at all costs.
- Cover the next pass, not the ball. Defenders behind the trap play the passing lanes, not the trapped player.
Coaching Points
- Patience is the point. The “soft” in 1-2-2 Soft means you contain and wait. Reward players for forcing a mistake, not for reaching in.
- Influence one direction. Decide which sideline you funnel to and make the whole team play to that intent.
- Communicate the trap. The wing and point must trap together and on time — a late or solo trap gives up a numbers advantage.
- Protect the middle and the rim. A pass to the middle beats any press. Keep the safeties honest and the back line disciplined.
When to Use It
Use the 1-2-2 Soft as a change of pace — after timeouts, to break an offense’s rhythm, or to speed a team up without the risk of an all-out trapping press. It’s also a good press for teams that want pressure but can’t afford to give up easy baskets when the trap is beaten.
