How to Beat a Box and 1 Defense: The “Tiger” Quick Hitter Play

Facing a Box and 1 defense can be one of the most frustrating challenges for a basketball coach, especially when the opposing team is determined to completely shut down your star player. To counter this junk defense, you need reliable basketball plays that create spacing, force defensive rotations, and exploit the zone’s natural weak spots.

If you are looking for a simple, quick hitter to get your best player the ball against a Box and 1, the “Tiger” play is incredibly effective. Below, we’ve broken down the video animation of this play into step-by-step instructions so you can easily implement it in your next practice.

Step-by-Step Instructions: The “Tiger” Quick Hitter

Step 1: The Setup Start with your point guard (Player 1) at the top of the key with the basketball. Position your two high-post players (Player 2 and Player 5) at the left and right elbows. Place Player 3 out wide on the right wing, and Player 4 on the left side, slightly above the low block.

Step 2: The Clear Out Initiate the play by having Player 3 sprint all the way across the court from the right wing to the left wing. This movement serves two purposes: it clears out the entire right side of the floor, and it forces the underlying zone defense to shift its attention and adjust its shape.

Step 3: The High Post Cross Once the right side is cleared out, Player 2 and Player 5 execute a cross screen for each other right at the free-throw line. At the same time, Player 1 takes a quick dribble toward the right side of the floor to improve the passing angle and engage the top defenders of the box.

Step 4: The Pass and Cut Following the screening action at the elbows, Player 5 pops into the open space right in the middle of the paint (the soft spot of the Box and 1). Player 1 delivers a direct pass to Player 5. As the ball is caught, Player 4 makes a hard backdoor cut from the left wing toward the basket. This leaves Player 5 with an excellent opportunity to shoot a high-percentage mid-range jumper, drive to the rim, or dump a high-low pass down to the cutting Player 4 for an easy layup.

Coaching Tips for Success:

  • Timing is everything: Ensure Player 1 waits for the cross screen to fully develop before making the pass.
  • Read the Defense: If the defense collapses on Player 5 when they catch the ball in the middle, Player 4’s baseline cut will almost always be wide open.
  • Sell the Decoy: Player 3 needs to sprint hard across the court to ensure the defense honors their movement, opening up the floor for the main action.

Add the Tiger quick hitter to your playbook to keep the defense guessing and stop them from neutralizing your top scorer!
