Offset Man Baseline Out of Bounds Play
Beating a disciplined man-to-man defense requires constant movement, ball reversals, and precise timing on off-ball cuts. This High Post Entry Baseline Cut play uses a sequence of perimeter swings to set up a critical high post touch, which serves as the trigger for a devastating baseline dive.
Initial Set
Effective offensive execution starts with proper spacing. This play begins in a balanced perimeter alignment with a single post player anchored inside.
- O1 and O4: Spaced at the top of the key/slots.
- O2 and O3: Positioned wide on the left and right wings.
- O5: Stationed on the low block.
Play Breakdown
The Ball Reversal and Clear Out
- The Action: The offense initiates movement with a quick perimeter swing. O1 passes the ball to O4 at the right slot. Immediately after making the pass, O1 sprints through the lane and clears out to the left corner.
- The Swing: O4 catches and quickly reverses the ball to O2 on the left wing. This side-to-side ball movement forces the entire offense to re-balance.
The High Post Flash
- The Action: The moment the ball reaches O2 on the wing, O5 flashes hard and fast from the low block up to the high post (the elbow area).
- The Entry: O2 snaps a direct, on-target entry pass to O5 at the high post.
The Trigger and The Baseline Cut
- The Action: O5 catching the ball at the high post is the trigger for the offense to attack the rim.
- The Cuts: The instant the ball hits O5’s hands, O1 initiates a hard, explosive cut from the left corner straight along the baseline toward the basket. Simultaneously, O4 dives aggressively from the top right slot straight down the middle of the lane.
- The Primary Read: O5 pivots, faces the basket, and delivers a quick pass to O1 on the baseline cut for an uncontested layup.
The Reset
- The Action: If the passing window to the baseline is closed, the offense maintains its flow. O1 simply continues their cut underneath the basket and clears out to the right wing.
- The Relocation: O2 relocates from the left wing to the top of the key. O5 passes the ball back out to O2, seamlessly resetting the offense to initiate the next action without stalling.
Non-Negotiable Coaching Points
Explosive Cuts: O1 must not jog through the baseline cut. The change of pace must be violent the second the ball goes into the post.
Patience on the Flash: O5 cannot leave the block too early. The flash to the high post must happen exactly as the ball leaves O4’s hands and travels to O2. Timing is everything.
Catch and Face: When O5 receives the entry pass, they must immediately pivot into a triple-threat position facing the rim. This establishes vision to see both the baseline cutter (O1) and the middle diver (O4).
