Flare to Back Screen Continuous Man Set

flare to back screen play animation

Man Set with a continuous flare to back screen action.  Lots of movement in this offense.   Could probably  be converted to a quick hitter if you like the action.

Static offenses die in transition. If your players are standing around, you are playing defense against yourself.

This Flare to Back Screen continuous man set forces defenders to communicate through consecutive, high-stress screens. If they hesitate for a split second, they give up an open layup.

Play Breakdown

Spacing & Setup

  • The Set: 1-4 High alignment. 1 controls the top; 5 is at the nail; 3 and 2 are stacked tight on the right wing.
  • The Goal: Empty the paint to eliminate help-side defense.

The Flare Trigger

  • The Action: 3 sets a hard, angled flare screen for 2.
  • The Read: 2 sells a hard step inside, then explodes off 3’s top shoulder. 1 reads defender x2. If x2 gets caught, 1 fires a skip pass to 2 for the open three-pointer.

The Counter: The Back Screen Rim Run

  • The Action: If the defense fights through or switches the flare, 5 immediately sets a back screen for 3.
  • The Read: 3 cuts hard off 5’s screen, diving straight to the rim. 1 delivers a bullet pass for an uncontested layup.
  • The Loop: If denied, 3 clears out, 5 pops, 1 swings the ball to 4, and you run the exact same sequence on the opposite side.

Coaching Points

  • Make Legal Contact: On the flare, 3 must hunt the defender’s hip, not air.
  • Patience on the Back Screen: 5 must wait for 3’s defender to commit to the recovery before setting the back screen.
  • Snap the Pass: No high, floating passes. Passers must use sharp chest or bounce passes to beat recovery defenders.
