Every coach runs into it: the other team drops into a zone and suddenly your offense stalls. This page collects every zone offense, zone quick hitter and zone out of bounds play on Hoop Coach in one place, organized by the zone you’re facing. Each play has a diagram and an animation you can watch step by step.
How to Beat a Zone Defense: 7 Principles
- Offset the zone. Line up in the gaps. Against an even front like a 2-3, use a one-guard front. Against an odd front like a 1-3-1, 1-2-2 or 3-2, use a two-guard front.
- Get the ball to the middle. A catch at the high post or free throw line forces the whole zone to react. From there, look to the short corner, the opposite block or a shot.
- Use the short corner and the baseline. A player in the short corner or a baseline runner puts the bottom of the zone in a bind and opens the high-low.
- Move the ball faster than the zone can shift. Quick ball reversal and skip passes beat zones. Make the defense slide, then attack before it gets set.
- Attack the gaps with the dribble. Drive between two defenders to make both of them commit, then kick it out to the open man.
- Screen the zone. Screening in on a defender or overloading one side lets you outnumber the zone in one area of the floor.
- Crash the offensive glass. Zones have a hard time boxing out because no one has a clear man to block out. Send your bigs and a wing to the boards on every shot.
